So What’s the Big Deal about Fabric?

So What’s the Big Deal about Fabric?

If you come into our store, you’re going to hear a lot of talk about fabric, and you may be wondering what all the fuss is about.  The short answer is that when it comes to quality clothing, fabric is everything.  But if you’re still having trouble justifying the investment, and are wondering if you could get away with choosing a discount fabric that looks relatively nice, here are a couple of things to consider.

A structure is only as good as its foundation.

Simply put, quality fabric is the single most important element of a well-made garment.  Think of it this way: if you were hosting an elegant dinner party, would you serve macaroni and cheese out of a cardboard box?  Of course not.  You know how important it is to start with the best ingredients in order to get the best result.  Clothing is no different; you get out of it what you put into it.  This is why we only use Italian and English fabrics from the finest luxury mills like Dormeuil, Holland & Sherry, Ermenegildo Zegna, and Scabal. The thread count and thread density are unrivaled, and these outstanding fabrics are much easier to work with, making it possible to create an exquisitely tailored garment that fits you perfectly.  There is no substitute for the look and feel of a well-made fabric – “close enough” is simply not close enough.

Quality will often cost you less in the long run.

You may think you’re saving money by choosing a lower-quality fabric that looks okay when it’s brand new, but that apparent upfront benefit will be short-lived.  Cheaper fabrics are not only less durable, they also start showing their age much sooner.  This degradation accelerates If you travel frequently or are planning on wearing your suit on a regular basis. With lower-quality fabrics, there will probably be a point where you start avoiding wearing your suit altogether, because it’s looking tired and worn, has lost its shape, or “just doesn’t feel right for some reason.”  It can be incredibly disheartening to spend effort and money on getting a suit made, only to have the magic fade in a matter of months.

Putting on a suit should be a pleasure, and should make you feel confident about how you look every time you wear it, no matter how often you wear it. The difference between a suit you’ll enjoy wearing for years versus one that you’ll have to replace regularly because it’s falling apart will come down to the decision to go with a superior fabric.

When it comes to choosing the best fabrics for your clothing, knowledge is power. Reading and researching is a great start, but you can learn a lot more by actually seeing a range of fabrics up close and feeling the difference.  Once you have that firsthand experience with quality fabrics, it’ll be easy to understand the best choice, and you’ll get a lot more out of your investment.
