Over the next four weeks we’re going to be discussing the foundational building blocks of men’s clothing, and there’s a reason why the first installment in this series is fabric.  Fabric is, without a doubt, the starting point from which everything else flows when it comes to creating the finest possible clothing.  If you start with cheap, low-quality fabrics, it’s no surprise that you’ll end up with a cheap-looking garment.  Likewise, if you start with quality fabrics, a skilled clothier can turn them into something magical.

Consider the source

For our clothing, we use only the finest English and Italian fabrics, from luxury mills like Ermenegildo Zegna, Holland & Sherry, Dormeuil, and Scabal. Fabrics with such a high thread count and thread density are a delight to work with, which makes it possible to get the best possible tailoring and fit.

Although the choice to go with these fabrics is based on quality, it also happens to be surprisingly cost-effective.  While there is certainly an upfront investment in buying better fabric, when you look at the bigger picture, it ends up costing less in the long run, both financially and in terms of confidence.  Replacing cheap pieces as they inevitably fall apart gets expensive more quickly than you think, and it’s frustrating when you have to keep dishing out money time after time on garments that don’t ever look quite as good as you feel they should.  This is especially true if you wear suits regularly or travel frequently for business – the wear and tear is simply not something that a cheaper fabric can withstand.

It’s all in the movement

You’re a busy person, and you’re moving all day long, so it makes sense that you’d want your clothing to move well with your body.  Have you ever worn something made out of a fabric that just didn’t feel or move right?  It can be extremely distracting, to say the least.  You can’t look good if you don’t feel good – high-quality fabrics not only look nice, but they also move in a way that reminds you why the investment is worth it.

Enjoy the process

Of course, there’s also the fun part: the aesthetic choices.  Whether you go with a plaid, pinstripe, tweed, or herringbone, in whatever color you choose, you can enjoy exploring your personal style.  Pair your own preferences with what’s appropriate for your lifestyle, and you’ll end up with outfits that you’ll love wearing time after time.

You get out of clothing what you put into it, and that’s why it’s essential to start with the very best from the very beginning by choosing quality fabrics that will provide a strong style foundation.  To fully understand what all the fuss is about, come in and look around and experience the difference for yourself.

Next week, in the second part of the series, we’ll talk about the importance of proper fit and how it factors into creating the perfect look.
